The standard temperature coefficient formula calculates the temperature delta from standard 25°C rating conditions: $\Delta T = T_{\text{cold, °C}} - 25^\circ\text{C}$. Multiplying $\Delta T$ by the manufacturer's negative temperature coefficient (%/°C) yields the percentage voltage change. Because $\Delta T$ is negative and the coefficient is negative, the resulting product is positive, increasing open-circuit voltage: $V_{oc,\text{cold}} = V_{oc,\text{STC}} \times [1 + (\text{Coeff} / 100 \times \Delta T)]$.
Every MPPT has two distinct voltage specs: the MPPT Operating Range (e.g., 120V–450V DC) where it actively tracks maximum power, and the Absolute Maximum Voc Limit (e.g., 500V DC). While running, panels operate near their lower $V_{mp}$ voltage. However, when the battery bank reaches 100% full or if an inverter fault triggers a sudden load disconnect, the array immediately snaps to full open-circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$). Sizing strings against cold $V_{oc}$ ensures the controller survives sudden disconnects on sub-zero mornings.
Wiring in series increases voltage while keeping current low, allowing you to use smaller, cheaper 10 AWG PV copper wire over long distances with minimal voltage drop. However, series strings must never exceed the controller's maximum cold Voc limit. Wiring in parallel increases current ($I_{sc}$), which requires thicker wire and combiner box fusing. A series-parallel configuration (like two parallel strings of 3 panels in series, or 3S2P) provides the perfect balance between high voltage efficiency and safe sub-zero limits.
